Reflection about Work Immersion Webinar Day 1-A: FUTURE PROFESSIONALS’ GUIDE IN JOB HUNTING

As organized by the basic education department, on Friday, April 22, 2022, we—the Grade 12 students—are invited to attend a webinar designed to guide us in our future endeavors and path as we are about to do our work immersion activity.

The event's speaker, Atty. Ma. Aini E. Salvadora, the former Director for Human Resources of Manila Central University, had opened the program proper. Atty. Salvadora elaborated on the Dos and Don'ts in Résumé and CV Writing. But before sharing her knowledge about résumé writing, she emphasized that success is different from one person to another.

Here are some of the Do's and Don'ts (in the Résumé writing) discussed in the webinar:

- Avoid putting irrelevant information

- Avoid using personal pronouns

- Avoid proclaiming things (let the employer see those characteristics in you)

- Your character reference should always be available

- Your educational background or work experience should be related to the job

Most of the points presented in the webinar were already discussed during our Reading & Writing class with Ms. Caabay last year. However, still, the webinar conducted is as relevant as it somehow refreshed our already existing knowledge about work applications and procedures.

Apart from the application-related information, Atty. Salvadora also mentioned a few things about the necessary personal attributes that are important for one to acquire. Those are:

- Skills are essential, but Attitude will take you places

- Listen to learn

- Building something is not a one-person team

- Self-improvement is always better

- Create your own path (life is not a race)

- Choose your battles

Surprisingly,  what struck me the most was not related to work application but rather about improving oneself, like choosing your battles. Atty. Salvadora emphasized that we are still a work in process as future employees or business owners. As we live our lives, we cannot be entirely perfect, but improving one's mindset and personal attributes are always a part of life and are something we should focus ourselves more than the job we are applying for.

Before the seminar ended, a question also caught my attention where someone asked Atty. Salvadora about being pressured by your parents to pursue a degree they want for you. Atty. Salvadora's answer is something that left an impact on me, as I also face the same dilemma where my parents want me to pursue a degree I don't want to take. Atty. Salvadora said that communicating the genuine desire of your heart will somehow alleviate the pressure from our parents. She shared that she also had the same problem when she was younger because her parents want her to pursue a degree related to medicine. She talked to her parents, saying that to make both their ends meet, she will be having to pursue her preferred course first, and if she failed at that, then she would have to take the degree her parents wanted for her. She explained that if you are sure about what you want to do, then make your parents know about it. But if you're still undecided, it will not be harmful to give your parents' preference a shot. Her response to the question opened a thought in my head that I did not expect to think of during the seminar. I thought the seminar would be boring and will all be about work immersion, but as the saying goes, you should always expect the unexpected.

Overall, the speaker's knowledge about the topic is commendable as she explains every bit of the subject extensively presented to us. Her work experience and ethical attributes are exemplary, apart from that she just passed the 2020/2021 Bar Examinations. I remember Atty. Salvadora from my second Manila Central University Elementary ID Card as I enrolled as a 3rd-grade student, where she was the registrar signatory (as she was the former University Registrar). Seeing from where she started and where she is now is very motivating to see, after almost 12 years, her continuous passion to better herself is not only something she advises but is something she also evidently applied to herself. Hearing her advice during the webinar inspired me more, knowing how she says those things from her personal experience.

Reflection about Work Immersion Day 1-B: Personality Development and Filling Out Government Forms

The speaker, Ms. Theresa P. Aspiras,  Phoenix Publishing House Senior Manager for Human Resources, disseminated the necessary points and information that are much needed by us.       She highlighted that our personality is how we present ourselves to the world as to future employees .  With this point, she stated the 3 V's to Building your Personal Brand:  Visual, Verb, and Voyage.       Visual corresponds to what the recruiters see. Ms. Theresa reiterated that we must dress to impress, which means we must present ourselves how the employer expects us to. One of her tips is wearing neutral colors since opting for a minimalist look is the best way to go. Ms. Theresa also noted that dressing properly is not the only point of having the Visual, but your  Resumé should also come along presentable with you.       Verb,  as Ms. Theresa explained, is all about our communicative aspects. Our words should always sh...
